The Butterfly Foundation needs your monetary support. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization developed to correct spinal deformities in children and to maintain an educational exchange between spine surgeons around the world and leading surgeons from the United States. In addition to the support of the NYU/HJD Spine Center, the Salvador B. Gautier Hospital in the Dominican Republic and the Hospital for Orthopedics & Trauma in Vietnam will host missions this year. Over 32 surgeons and other specialists have promised their time in 2009.

The government of the Dominican Republic through close ties with Dr. Cruz Bournigal (Chief of Spine Surgery and Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at the main teaching hospital, Gotierre) and Dr. William Jana (Cleveland Clinic-trained rheumatologist and Minister of Public Health) will be assisting the program in many ways, but there remain expenses that can only be filled through donations to the Butterfly Foundation.

Examples of these expenses include: airline tickets for surgical technicians and nurses, X-ray and MRI mailing for pre-operative planning, hyperalimination for patients pre- and post-operative, transportation for patients from outlying areas of the country, and other unforeseen costs. An extraordinary amount of work, devotion, and financial support is necessary to continue our efforts.
